Midwives from six countries sharpen their research skill

Midwives drawn from different institutions in Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Kenya and Zimbabwe refreshed their research skills in a series of country workshops organized by the Lugina African Midwives Research Network between July and August 2013. Key concepts covered included developing good research questions, conducting literature and critiquing research works.

Prof. Dame Tina Lavender who is LAMRN Principal Investigator (PI) said, “The research skills training for midwives is part of the capacity building activities of LAMRN which aims to empower midwives in evidence based practices.”

KENYA WORKSHOPCommenting on the last workshop held from 2nd to 4th September 2013 at Olive Gardens Nairobi, Sally Nduta who coordinates LAMRN activities in the region noted that the project had been able to achieve very remarkable progress in mobilising the country teams for the workshops. “Within a very short period of time all the six countries have held their first round of skills sharing workshops. We expect a lot of activity over the next few months” She noted.

Prof. Grace Omoni who is also the LAMRN Chair and focal group leader (Kenya) at the Nairobi workshop expressed her optimism about the pace of activities. “We are looking forward to encouraging midwives to infuse research and learning into their day-to-day practices in order to make a contribution to reduce maternal and new-born mortality figures in our countries. The role of a well informed and inquisitive professional midwife is crucial to this process”. She said.

The workshop exposed participants to other areas such as barriers to change and developing strategies to utilize research findings in their practice.

At each workshop, a group of champion midwives were identified to spearhead research activities in their countries.

The workshops were facilitated by a team distinguished midwifery and research educators including Prof.Dame Tina Lavender – University of Manchester, Prof. Grace Omoni- University of Nairobi, Director School of Nursing and LAMRN Chair and Dr. Sabina Wakasiaka- Lecturer University of Nairobi.
