Empowering midwives through research – Malawi

malawiThe second LAMRN workshop for Malawi was conducted from 28th February to 1st March 2014 at Victoria Hotel in Blantyre.  Twenty Midwives attended the workshop and they came from Nursing training institutions, Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi, Ministry of health headquarters and various hospitals.

The picture above shows the participants. The resource persons included Prof. Angela Chimwaza, a volunteer – Dr Alfred Maluwa who is the Research Director for Kamuzu College of Nursing and the three core LAMRN midwives for Malawi namely, Dr Melanie Hami, Dr Ezereth Kabuluzi and Christina Mbiza.

The participants were enthusiastic and expressed how they are benefitting from the workshops. They gave encouraging comments on how the knowledge that they gained from the first workshop is impacting their work situations such as developing analytical skills and seeking evidence to apply to Midwifery practice.

Further, members were pleased with the progress of a meta synthesis paper on experiences of men during labour and delivery that the three core midwives and Prof. Chimwaza are writing.  As a result, the midwives have organized themselves into 3 working groups so that they too will choose a topic and do a meta synthesis supervised by the three core midwives of LAMRN.
