CONAMA Launch

PROF. GRACE OMONI ELECTED 1ST PRESIDENT OF THE NEWLY LAUNCHED CONAMA

CONFEDERATION OF AFRICAN MIDWIVES ASSOCIATIONS (CONAMA) a continent-wide organization was officially and successfully inaugurated on Wednesday, 17th July 2013. The launch coincided with the opening ceremony of the 3rd ICM Africa Regional Congress that took place at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

During this colorful event, Dr. Jemimah Dennis Antwi, ICM Regional Advisor for Anglophone Africa gave a presentation on how the CONAMA was conceived and birthed.

There were short speeches given by the ICM President Dr. Frances Day-Stirk, Chief Nursing Officer from the Ministry of Health, Kenya, Mr. Chris Rakuom and the Chairperson of Kenya Midwives Chapter Mrs. Louisa R S Muteti.

The special Guest of Honour was Cabinet Secretary of Health ably represented by the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Kimani. In his speech, he stated the commitment of the Government of Kenya to Maternal and Newborn Child Health and specially highlighted the Free Maternity Scheme rolled out by the government as a step towards the achievement of vision 2030 and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The 1st CONAMA Secretariat and Board Members were introduced to all those present.

LAMRN’s very own Prof. Grace Omoni who was elected the 1st President of CONAMA; others in the committee include the following:

  •     Representative of Anglophone Countries: Dr. Deliwe Nyathikazi,
  •    Regional Advisor for Anglophone Africa Dr. Jemimah Dennis Antwi,
  •     Vice President of Jhpiego Ronald H. Magarick,
  •     Deputy Regional Director of ESARO UNFPA: Ms Lina Mousa
  •    IPAS Vice President: Amb. Dr. Eunice Brookman-Amissah.
